- Well, let me take both sides on this one...
-
- Side A - Students cannot always afford to pay full price for expensive
- software, so they are (I feel) allowed to get special cost considerastions
- if it is _required_ software that the school doesn't provide.
-
- Side B - Sure they _may_ be using it for school right now, but when they
- graduate they will almost certainly continue to use the package for
- commercial purposes. At this point they should pay (I feel) a "commercial
- upgrade fee". Not that the product would be any different, but give them
- the liscence to use that product to sell their services. $900 is _not_
- alot of money, and will pay for itself in less than one job if you're
- doing this professionally.
-
- Side C - (side c?!?) - If a student is going to school for this kind of
- thing, the school should most definitely have the equipment _required_ to
- complete a project they assign to you. As far as extra curricular stuff,
- that the student will be doing on his own time... Why should they get a
- discount for that? There's no way they aren't going to use it to promote
- themselves during and after college. And for some reason (maybe it's just
- ME) I seriously doubt, no matter how much they're into this, a student
- will not go back to his/her dorm to work on "scientific testing &
- evaluation" just for fun.. Come on.. Plus, most of that work is pretty
- intense, and requires serious computing power. Don't tell me that what
- you're pulling off on the HP or SGI at school can be taken home on a
- floppy worked on the Amiga?!?
